What is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic dance is a freeform, music-driven movement practice where you’re invited to let go, move however your body feels, with whoever you want, including by yourself, and fully immerse yourself in the rhythms without judgment or expectation. Unlike traditional dance classes or club settings, there are no set steps, no talking on the dance floor, and no need to perform — it’s all about self-expression, connection, and presence. After a short optional facilitated warm-up (with meditation, solo warm-up, boundary management and connection exercises), the main part of the experience begins with gentle music, gradually building into energetic, uplifting beats, and then winding down into softer, grounding sounds, creating a natural journey through movement. You have the freedom to dance entirely on your own or to connect and share movement with others if it feels right in the moment. It's a space to be unapologetically you.

People come to ecstatic dance for different reasons: some to release stress, some to explore creativity, and others simply to enjoy the sense of community with like-minded people in a welcoming, supportive space. It can feel like both a workout and a meditation, leaving you energized, clear-headed, and deeply connected to yourself and the group around you. Whether you love dancing or think you “can’t dance,” ecstatic dance is for everyone — it’s not about how you look, but how you feel.

If you are wondering what sort of music we dance to, listen to the music from a previous dance: https://www.mixcloud.com/dj\_flow\_dance/ecstatic-beginnings/

What is Somatic Yoga?

Also known as embodied yoga, this relatively new style blends the insights of modern Western neuroscience with the ancient wisdom of Eastern traditions. Its primary focus is on regulating the nervous system, allowing individuals to navigate the challenges of daily life with greater balance and ease. The participants are guided through simple poses while being encouraged to draw their attention to their bodies and let their sensations lead the way. In this approach, the teacher acts as a facilitator, helping to shape a practice that is unique to each individual. With its gentle nature, this practice is accessible to individuals of all skill and fitness levels.

This playful yoga class will prepare your body perfectly for the upcoming dance, while also giving you a chance to connect with yourself before connecting with others.

Please bring a yoga mat and a small blanket or towel. A few spare mats are available on request.

Dress up warmly in layers; this is not a very physically demanding style of yoga.

About Plot 9

Plot 9, once a derelict council allotment, has been transformed by the artist Andy Millns into an enchanted community garden and gathering space; a hidden oasis in the urban space.

This magical place features two repurposed parachutes, which act like a cover from the rain and the scorching sun. We will light a small bonfire in the chill area for anyone taking a rest from dancing and wanting to warm up.

Note that there is no bar at this venue, but we provide a limited amount of drinking water, and will serve tea and light snacks at the end. Feel free to bring your own water bottle and non-alcoholic drinks, we welcome refillable flasks. There is also a dry toilet for us to use.

Parking : restrictions are in place just outside the plot, however the nearby streets have free parking after 16:30, and all day on Sundays and bank holidays, e.g. on Dinsdale road

Accessibility : Please note the plot has steps and uneven surfaces, so it’s unfortunately not fully wheelchair accessible. Light assistance is available for navigating the stairs if needed.

Closest station : Maze Hill station is only a few steps away, served by Thameslink and Southeastern trains.

Meet your facilitator

Flora (a.k.a. DJ Flow) is an experienced dancer and DJ in multiple styles, as well as a yoga teacher, and ADHD and trauma coach. She recently transitioned from a career in technology to focus on her and others’ mental health, learning various modalities. She utilises all her skills and experience to create an inclusive, calm space for everyone’s healing and enjoyment.

You can find out more about her at https://flow-state-healing.com

What if it rains?

The parachutes cover us in case of light rain.

In case there is a prediction of torrential rain, high winds or thunderstorms, we will cancel the event. We’ll notify ticket holders by email at least 2 hrs in advance if weather threatens cancellation.

What to bring?

  • Loose, comfy, warm clothes in layers that you don't mind potentially getting a little dirty (we are outdoors, it can get cold in the evening, and the yoga class is quite low energy as well)
  • Warm socks because we dance without shoes
  • Water bottle
    - A blindfold for a more immersive experience during yoga or dance
  • A yoga mat and a small blanket or towel, if you are doing the yoga class (limited amount of spare mats available upon request)
  • A towel and bathing clothes if you plan to use the sauna (it's clothes-on)

Photos & Videos

We ask the participants not to use their phones during the dance. Hence, photographs and videos are not allowed on the dance floor.

Prices

Tickets are tiered; please choose the price that matches your financial situation. Early bird prices until Tuesday midnight. Note that this is a small, cosy event with a maximum of 20 people. Spaces fill quickly—booking in advance is recommended.

We believe everyone should have access to the healing power of music and dance. If you can't afford a ticket, please contact us and we'll find a solution.

Crew spaces are also available, contact us at adorjanflora@gmail.com to inquire.

Guidelines

1. No Talking on the Dance Floor

Use movement, sound, or expression instead of words. We'll have some time to chat after the dance.

2. Be Authentic & Don't Judge

There are no right or wrong moves. Follow your body, your breath, your emotions. Dance alone or with others. Stretch in the middle of the dance floor. Don't people please. There is no judgment. Dance barefoot if you can, for grounding and freedom.

3. Respect Boundaries

Honour your own needs and those of others. Always seek (non-verbal) consent before any partner dance or touch. A “no” is a “no,” and a “maybe” is a “no” too. To maintain the integrity of our dance floor, all touch should be platonic and non-sexual in intent. Avoid public displays of affection and any gestures that might make others uncomfortable.

4. No Booze

Ecstatic Dance is about natural presence. Please arrive sober and stay present throughout the journey.

5. No Phones, No Photos

Keep technology away from the dance floor. This is a space of presence, privacy, and freedom.

6. Stay with the Journey

An ecstatic dance set has an intentional arc — a beginning, a peak, and a landing; a purposeful journey through emotions. If you can, please arrive on time, stay until the end, and honour the collective container.

7. Care for Yourself & the Space

Rest when you need, hydrate, maintain your personal hygiene, and be mindful of others.
