About

Following the incredible success of Cooperation Day 2025, we’re back! And this time, we’re going “from nuts and bolts to seizing the political moment for people power”.

**Nuts and bolts. **

Join us in the morning on Saturday July 4th to gain the tools to take control of your housing and work. Sessions include:

  • Housing co-ops dayschool - from ideas to practice: fundraising, legal, finances and living together (for existing groups ready to take action)
  • Collective decision making and managing conflict
  • Savings clubs as a community organising tool
  • Much more!

Seizing the political moment.

In the afternoon we will come together to talk about how we build collective power in this political moment - the opportunities and the challenges for a grassroots cooperative movement.

Hear about some of the actions co-ops are already taking, join the discussion about what more needs to be done and find out how you can get involved today

Housing co-op - Demystifying Finances

Getting your finances right is key to making your housing co-op dream a long-term reality. We'll cover the practical financial foundations every housing co-op needs: opening a bank account, understanding co-op-specific finance issues, managing day-to-day income and expenditure, and putting together a basic business plan.

Whether you're confident with spreadsheets or find numbers scary, this session will help you get an idea of what your co-op's finances need to look like.

Housing Co-op - Working Together as Co-op Members

A housing co-op is only as strong as the people in it. This session is about how to get along and stay together beyond the initial excitement of the early days.

We'll look at what unites us beyond a shared need for housing; how to develop a vision, values and principles; running meetings that are genuinely inclusive; and we'll delve into group dynamics, disagreement and what to do when things go wrong.

6 Steps to Conflict Resolution

In horizontal organisations conflict hits harder. Our organisations are more reliant on shared responsibility, communication and trust, and conflict that goes unresolved can drain energy, erode trust, and hold us back.

Drawing on the framework laid out by Navigate’s mediator Paul Kahawatte on the Punchcard podcast, this session explores a simple six-step process for addressing conflict constructively.

Community Assets in Community Ownership

It’s harder and harder to find spaces where we can come together and have a nice time without spending money. And with the far right trying to make neighbours into enemies, we need community spaces more than ever, from football clubs and gay bars to bookshops and canteens.

In this session, we will learn from successful worker - and community-run spaces in London. What works, what doesn’t work and how could we scale this model up across the city?

Housing Co-op - Legal

Co-ops are great fun, but there are also a few legal and financial hoops you have to jump through to get going and a few more throughout the co-ops life. We will guide you through registration, some of the jargon, relevant organisations in authority you have to deal with and some of the acronyms. Fire questions at us - but we don’t promise to have all the answers

Housing Co-op - Fundraising

Find out about the different ways emergent or growing co-ops can raise funds to buy their homes, including issuing loanstock, applying for a bank mortgage, open crowdfunding, public events, approaching contacts directly and securing loans from established co-ops. We will share examples and discuss the pros and cons of each approach. We will also discuss accessing funds through co-op networks such as Radical Routes and COS.

Participatory Budgeting

Financial reports are often confusing, making it difficult for members to engage in important organisational decisions. This session introduces the £1 Model, a simple tool that turns complex financial information into a clear picture of where money comes from and where it goes.

When a worker co-op in Leeds found itself in a serious financial crisis and just months away from being unable to pay workers' wages, it used the £1 Model to make its finances accessible to all members, resulting in better decision-making that helped the co-op survive.
