What is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic dance is a freeform, music-driven movement practice where you’re invited to let go, move however your body feels, with whoever you want, including by yourself, and fully immerse yourself in the rhythms without judgment or expectation. Unlike traditional dance classes or club settings, there are no set steps, no talking on the dance floor, and no need to perform — it’s all about self-expression, connection, and presence. After a short optional facilitated warm-up (with meditation, solo warm-up, boundary management and connection exercises), the main part of the experience begins with gentle music, gradually building into energetic, uplifting beats, and then winding down into softer, grounding sounds, creating a natural journey through movement. You have the freedom to dance entirely on your own or to connect and share movement with others if it feels right in the moment.

People come to ecstatic dance for different reasons: some to release stress, some to explore creativity, and others simply to enjoy the sense of community with like-minded people in a welcoming, supportive space. It can feel like both a workout and a meditation, leaving you energized, clear-headed, and deeply connected to yourself and the group around you. Whether you love dancing or think you “can’t dance,” ecstatic dance is for everyone — it’s not about how you look, but how you feel.

What is Somatic Yoga?

Also known as embodied yoga, this relatively new style blends the insights of modern Western neuroscience with the ancient wisdom of Eastern traditions. Its primary focus is on regulating the nervous system, allowing individuals to navigate the challenges of daily life with greater balance and ease. The participants are guided through simple poses while being encouraged to draw their attention to their bodies and let their sensations lead the way. In this approach, the teacher acts as a facilitator, helping to shape a practice that is unique to each individual. With its gentle nature, this practice is accessible to individuals of all skill and fitness levels.

This playful yoga class will prepare your body perfectly for the upcoming dance, while also giving you a chance to connect with yourself before connecting with others.

Please bring a yoga mat and a small blanket or towel. A few spare mats are available on request.

Dress up warmly in layers; this is not a very physically demanding style of yoga.

Guidelines

  1. No Talking on the Dance Floor

Use movement, sound, or expression instead of words. We'll have some time to chat after the dance.

2. Be Authentic & Don't Judge

There are no right or wrong moves. Follow your body, your breath, your emotions. Dance alone or with others. Stretch in the middle of the dance floor. Don't people please. There is no judgment. Dance barefoot if you can, for grounding and freedom.

3. Respect Boundaries

Honour your own needs and those of others. Always seek (non-verbal) consent before any partner dance or touch. A “no” is a “no,” and a “maybe” is a “no” too. Avoid public displays of affection and any gestures that might make others uncomfortable.

4. No Booze

Ecstatic Dance is about natural presence. Please arrive sober and stay present throughout the journey.

5. No Phones

Keep technology away from the dance floor. This is a space of presence, privacy, and freedom.

6. Stay with the Journey

An ecstatic dance set has an intentional arc — a beginning, a peak, and a landing; a purposeful journey through emotions. If you can, please arrive on time, stay until the end, and honour the collective container.

7. Care for Yourself & the Space

Rest when you need, hydrate, and be mindful of others.
